Everton’s 23 year old midfielder, Ross Barkley, has been strongly linked to Spurs in the past week for about £30-35 million.
This would perhaps be a sensible move for Barkley. Despite the huge desire for him to do well and become a Goodison Park ‘legend’, he is always put under a lot of pressure when he plays. Fans turn on him far quicker than any other player on the field as he is a local product, and this may be responsible for his slightly nervous style of play. This is unfortunately normal for academy products, and Wilshere, for example, has been subjected to similar treatment by Arsenal fans. Perhaps a change of location and fans would be beneficial for Barkley?
Similarly, he would seem to suit Tottenham’s style of play. He is a good passer of the ball, and can change the momentum of a game in an instant, and presses well. Tottenham’s midfield also needs more pace, which Barkley has. However, it is worth mentioning that Spurs’s midfield is already packed. He would have to work hard to gain a place in the team, and compete with several others for it. This move may therefore see him fade out as a player if he struggles for game time, and one of England’s best prospects may drift out of the scene, as Rodwell did (another Everton youth product).
